Religious affiliation is one of the things that could tell whether someone is in the us- or them-group. If one happens to live in a society where most people have a particular religion, then – if you can make yourself also believe in that religion – it will be a lot easier to convince the people around you that you are one of them and deserve the “better” treatment.
