Print copies of Ask Yourself to be Moral, a detailed investigation of my 2Q system for examining your own beliefs, will be available to order shortly (I’m waiting for a sample copy to make sure all is well before taking anyone’s money). But for you early adopters out there, the Amazon Kindle version of the books is live and ready to go! (The electronic copy costs less than half of what the print copy will cost, by the way.)

You will (I hope) be happy to know that this book is not just for atheists. Anyone with an interest in developing a moral philosophy — or ensuring that their existing philosophy is intellectually rigorous — can benefit from 2Q.

Once I was able to connect to the mail server consistently, the hundreds of backlogged e-mails I thought I had turned out to be close to 2,000! I’m slogging through them as quickly as I can — sorry to keep everyone in suspense!

Based on this and the increased amount of e-mail this site has generated as it gains in popularity, I will no longer be replying individually to those who write (there were a lot of people who wanted to correspond off the blog). Instead, I will reply to e-mails via this blog only. To keep the conversation going, though, I will also reply in-blog to blog comments. So if you want to respond to something I say in a post, just reply to the post.

I won’t respond to 100% of the e-mails and blog comments I get, but I hope to be able to respond to at least a representative sample.

I should be through all the mail and back to writing posts on Monday. Thanks to everyone for your patience!

Thank you to everyone who has sent their well wishes and support over the last few days! The visitor count for this site has jumped from the tens (where it sat while I was in the midst of this bizarre Internet problem) back to over 1,000 where it used to be, and I am tentatively hopeful that the problem is behind us.

I’m going through the hundreds of e-mails that got backlogged during this problem and hope to begin posting new discussions on Tuesday. I will likely also be switching to a “blog only” discussion format, as replying to writers both on the blog and via e-mail was sorely testing my resources.

Over the last few months I — and many of my readers — have been having serious problems with this Web site. Apparently there is an Internet server (I don’t know the technical name for the thing) out there that is blocking this site. This means that anyone attempting to get to this site whose Internet path happens to go through that server will get a message that the site doesn’t exist. I’ve had people from all over the world complain of this problem, and it affects me most of the time I attempt to manage the site or retrieve my e-mail.

I think I’ve found a workaround and will attempt to move forward. I know I’ve lost a lot of e-mail because of this, and I also have quite a backlog that I have to get to. I am going to have to pick and choose the e-mail I respond to more than usual in the near future so that I can get caught up, so if you wrote to me in the last two months and do not receive a reply within the next couple of weeks, your note either never got to me or I had to put it aside. Please feel free to write again.

I apologize for the inconvenience to all my loyal readers. Hopefully things will go better moving forward!

(And if any of you have knowledge of how this Internet problem could be fixed, I’d appreciate your help!)

Site update schedule

As regular readers of this blog have noticed, I often go many weeks in between responses to e-mails and updates of this site.

I can’t do much about my frequent slowness in responding, since many of these responses take quite a bit of time to formulate. But to make things easier for my readers, I’ve installed new software that lets me schedule when posts are released to the blog. From now on, when I respond to a batch of correspondence, I’ll schedule one or two of them to appear on the blog each day.

I’ll publish particularly timely items more quickly, of course.

Let me know what you think of this plan. I hope it will make it easier for you to read all the posts without feeling overwhelmed.

Apologies for the long delay since my last reply to anyone’s e-mail. I do occasionally have to take long breaks from this blog, but in this case the situation was different.

I received a series of e-mails from someone who was very suicidal. I helped the person as best I could, but ended up having to contact the police and figure out where the person was located so that he could be prevented from harming himself.

Although I believe I did the right thing in the circumstances, I needed to take a little break from this blog. Every thing’s fine now and I’ll start getting caught up on your e-mails in a day or two.

Just a note to my faithful readers — I’m getting great big piles of e-mail now, and as you may realize I don’t have time to answer everything every day. For this reason, I’m going to be cutting back a bit on what’s being posted to the site. I’ll still try to keep a representative sample up, and I’ll still post e-mails to which I give lengthy replies, but I’ve stopped posting every “good for you” type e-mail. But don’t stop sending them — I really appreciate it!

And don’t worry — all the interesting hate mail will still go on the blog. (I’m skipping those e-mails limited to single four-letter words, though).

Some of you may be happy to know that part of the reason I’m so busy is that I’m working on a book related to this site’s content. It’s going to be appropriate for both theists and atheists, and (hopefully sometime in October) I will be making pre-publication copies available through this site so that all of you can read it and help me improve the discussion before the final edition is published.

Here’s a little housekeeping note for y’all. From this point forward, I will no longer be posting profanity on this blog. Instead, I’ll edit it a bit so that it can be understood in context but the naughtiness isn’t explicit. I’m doing this after it came to my attention that the large instance of mail referring to me as a f****t, etc., might be causing the blog to be blocked by nannyware.

I also have not been publishing all complimentary e-mails as I did in the past. There has been a gigantic influx of e-mail in the last few days, so I have been picking and choosing a little bit to keep the workload manageable. I’m still publishing all the hate mail, though (because some enjoy reading it so much!)

I appreciate everyone’s understanding!
